Over 12 months I photographed the people who live, work and study at BSU. The purpose of the project was to to make images and collect stories of the various people across the university. with Campus Skateparks and Bath Spa University. With the aim of bringing artists and skateboarders together, Point &amp; Shoot was held in July 2024 – incorporating free skate sessions and tuition for the local community, alongside photography talks with local Bristol photographers Chris Hoare and James Griffiths. The day was documented by photographer James Allen using a West-African-inspired portrait studio. Taken on a traditional large format camera, a selection of these images have been installed into the skate park as part of a free exhibition. The longer I have lived&nbsp; here the more of the landscape I’ve explored, from the hinterlands around the conurbations, to the long, winding paths that meander through meadow, wood and rock. I have felt the folklore, the rebellion, and the mystery that lies beneath the ground and in the air as I walk countless miles, recording images of memories long past and fleeting moments hidden in the landscape. The variation of people that I have encountered&nbsp; From the well healed, the unfortunate and the anarchic all participate in the habitual rhythm of life that has gone on interrupted for thousands of years.The longer I spend here the more of this song is exposed. What lies in and on the ground has always, and will always impact the stories and the narratives, the fortunes and the failures of the people that inhabit this land. Moving forwards the cycle will repeat and fortune will be found again for many. My family is rooted in this landscape, they have grown from the gifts that lay beneath the surface. For centuries the limestone of the Mendips has been quarried to forge the cities of Bath and Bristol leaving cavernous scars on the landscape. The quarrying of limestone has been a traditional industry for centuries. This Geology has been a gift for the population. Alongside agriculture, quarrying limestone and coal mining has sustained rural communities for centuries. In the post-industrial age, the area has struggled to sustain its population and economy, in part to the closure of the Somerset coal fields with the last coal pit closing in 1974, the surviving quarries have been a lifeline. The quarries that scar the landscape are located within a triangle of towns, to the west Shepton Mallet, the north Norton Radstock and to the east the market town of Frome. This is due to my upbringing and the cultural parallels that can be drawn from the sprawling veins of London. Once you venture out of the centres towards the edges you encounter the mysterious hinterlands that give way to vast fields, small villages, Union Jacks, Anarchist comunes, Witches and Wizards, Saint George crosses, hard hands, exuberent wealth, grinding poverty . I am bound to this place through marriage and now through blood, although I don’t feel at home I do always feel welcome.The people I meet might not always understand me, and I them, but they are always eager to welcome, eager to share and eager to show. The great Caucasus mountain range was home to the Circassians, a union of ancient tribes whose land&nbsp; hugged the rugged north-east coast of the Black Sea for thousands of years. Its strategic location bridging Europe and Asia has meant that its peoples have been players in conflicts between vast empires. Over the course of the nineteenth century the Russian Empire systematically attacked Circassia for its strategic importance, resulting in the genocide of an estimated 600,000 Circassians. By 1864 Circassia was laid to waste. The remaining population fled across the Black Sea to settle in and fight for the Ottoman Empire against the Russian Empire, becoming the first stateless people in modern history. The diaspora spread across the Ottoman Empire. One group settled in what is now Israel. Today, a population of 3,000 resides in the village of Kfar Kama near the Sea of Galilee. Famed for their courage and skill as warriors, these Circassians are among the only Muslims drafted to fight in the Israel Defense Forces. The Circassians, who are also known by their native name Adyghe or Adiga, are integrated into Israeli society but equally shun marriage outside their community, fiercely retaining their traditions, religion, dress, language and identity as highlanders of the great Caucasus Mountains. A people with no state, the Circassians’ biggest fear is assimilation into an ever changing world. The region was the focus of the 2008 war with Russia and as part of the ceasefire brokered by Nicholas Sarkhozy Russia now has many peacekeepers patrolling the boundary, the EUMM ensure that the terms of the agreement are stuck to and assist in prisoner exchanges and mediation. XIX:&nbsp;The boundary line between Georgia and South Ossetia; the government in Tbilisi still regards the break away region as sovereign Georgian soil. The Kremlin backs the defacto South Ossetian government and ethnic Ossetians living in the region hold Russian passports. With the need for both parents to work to meet the spiralling costs of living in a time of social unease and austerity my role would constantly flip from tradtional breadwinner to care provider. It is my intention to explore my role as a Father, and how this impacts on my own, as well as my children’s lives. These portraits were often set up and performed during moments of high stress and pressure. From dealing with Covid, to the relentless cycle of domestic chores, or the just the simple balance of emotional well-being, my own as well as my children.
